Janet Tamba

Vice Principal, Liberia

For 14 years, Janet Tamba served as a teacher at J.W. Pearson Public School in Monrovia. When her school became a Bridge Liberia school—three years ago—her knowledge and experience was recognised and she was made Vice Principal.

Janet hasn’t looked back since, working extremely hard to make sure all her students get the best education possible. She makes sure she’s the first person at school every morning, so the day gets off to a smooth start, with teachers and pupils ready for lessons.

“I want to ensure that teachers are on campus, signed in, and that they’re teaching their lessons properly” she explains. In Liberia, this is very important because students had been suffering from high levels of teacher absenteeism—something Bridge is determined to change.

Janet makes sure she goes above and beyond when it comes to making the school a good place to be. She always makes sure that classrooms are tidy, explaining that “a tidy classroom creates a healthy environment for learning.”

Janet has taken an innovative approach when it comes to addressing some of the inequalities prevalent in education. She organises a Girls’ Reading Club, which has helped many girls over the years to practise their reading and become better students. “In a society like Liberia where women are marginalised, girls being studious and putting in time to reading will help them catch up with their male counterparts.”

She’s full of praise for the changes she has seen take place in J.W. Pearson since Bridge took over. She says that teachers never had the right materials in the past, but now that Bridge supplies such a strong model teaching is much better. Thanks for all your hard work Janet!
